Balancing academics, athletics, and personal growth can be a challenging yet rewarding experience for any high school athlete. As a freshman at Corner Canyon High School and a lacrosse player for teams like Utah Summit LC, West Coast Starz Gold, and Red Hots National, my days are packed with action, discipline, and purpose. Here’s a glimpse into my daily routine and what it takes to pursue lacrosse at a competitive level while aiming for a future in Division I and beyond.
Morning: Starting the Day Strong
The alarm goes off at 6:00 AM, and I’m up and ready to tackle the day. The morning is about fueling my body and mind. A typical breakfast might include eggs, toast, fruit, and a protein shake—something to give me the energy I’ll need for the busy day ahead.
By 7:30 AM, I’m heading to school. As a student-athlete, staying on top of my academics is a priority. My teachers and coaches emphasize the importance of being well-rounded, and I take that seriously. Classes like math and biology challenge me to think critically, which is a skill I’ve found useful both on and off the field.
Afternoon: Training and Skill Development
Once the school day ends, it’s time for practice or training. Depending on the day, I’m either on the field with my Corner Canyon High School team or training individually. As a defender and long stick midfielder (LSM), my focus is on mastering footwork, improving stick skills, and honing my defensive strategy.
Drills like ground ball battles, defensive slides, and stick checks are part of my routine. I also dedicate time to transition plays, as contributing offensively as an LSM can be a game-changer. My coaches push me to be better every day, and I embrace the grind.
Evening: Strength and Recovery
After practice, I’ll often head to the gym for strength and conditioning. Building strength is crucial for staying competitive, and I focus on exercises that enhance my speed, agility, and power. Whether it’s squats, deadlifts, or agility drills, each session is designed to make me a more explosive player on the field.
Post-workout, recovery is key. This includes stretching, foam rolling, and sometimes even a quick ice bath. Dinner is another opportunity to refuel, with meals rich in protein, vegetables, and healthy carbs. Staying hydrated throughout the day is also a top priority.
Night: Reflecting and Recharging
In the evening, I spend time reviewing game footage, studying my opponents, or strategizing for upcoming matches. It’s also a chance to set goals for the next day, whether it’s perfecting a new move or excelling in a particular drill.
Before bed, I unwind by catching up on homework or spending time with family and friends. By 10:00 PM, I’m winding down and preparing for another big day.
The Bigger Picture
Each day is a step closer to my ultimate goals: playing Division I lacrosse. The path isn’t always easy, but the journey is incredibly fulfilling. It’s about passion, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence.
For any athlete out there, my advice is to stay disciplined, embrace challenges, and never lose sight of your dreams. Whether it’s on the field, in the classroom, or at home, give your best effort every single day. That’s the mindset of a top athlete.
From the backyard to Division 1—watch the journey unfold.
