If you’re like me, you’ve been grinding through the club lacrosse season all summer and fall. Tournaments, travel, practices—it feels like there’s always something going on. But now that club is winding down, it’s time to shift gears and get ready for the high school lacrosse season.
High school lacrosse is different. It’s not just about playing with kids from all over the country like in club; it’s about playing for your school, your teammates, and your community. There’s something special about putting on that jersey and stepping onto the field with the guys you see in the hallways every day.
Here’s what I’ve been thinking about as I get ready for the high school season—and maybe it’ll help you too.
Why the Transition from Club to High School Matters
- Team Chemistry Is Everything
In club, rosters can change a lot from season to season. High school lacrosse is different. You’re playing with the same group of guys for months, and building that chemistry is huge. Knowing how your teammates move on the field and building trust with them can make a big difference when the games get tight. - The Game Feels Different
High school lacrosse has its own vibe. It’s usually more physical and a little slower-paced than club ball, but it’s also way more intense because you’re playing for your school. Learning how to adapt to that style of play is key, especially if you’re trying to lock down your spot or take on a bigger role. - It’s About School Pride
Let’s be honest—there’s nothing better than repping your school. Hearing your classmates cheer during games or seeing your name in the morning announcements? That hits differently. It’s about more than just lacrosse—it’s about being part of something bigger.
How I’m Getting Ready
- Resting Up
I’ll admit, after a long club season, I’m beat. Taking a couple of weeks to rest my body has been a game-changer. Recovery isn’t just about being lazy—it’s about making sure you’re ready to give 100% when practices start. - Getting in Shape
The high school season is a grind, so now’s the time to get my conditioning right. I’ve been hitting the gym, running sprints, and doing agility drills to make sure I’m ready to go. Strength and endurance can be the difference between a solid season and getting burned out halfway through. - Dialing in My Skills
This is also a good time to focus on the little things. For me, as a defender/LSM, that means working on my footwork, stick checks, and ground balls. High school practices are intense, so I want to show up ready to compete. - Hanging with My Teammates
The best part of high school lacrosse is the friendships. I’ve been spending more time with my high school teammates, whether it’s working out together, hitting the wall, or just hanging out. Building those connections now makes us better when the season starts.
The Bigger Picture
High school lacrosse is special. It’s not just about you—it’s about your team, your school, and making memories that last way longer than the season. Don’t get me wrong, club lacrosse is awesome, but there’s something different about playing for the place you call home.
As club season winds down, take this time to get your mind and body ready for the high school season. Rest, train, and connect with your team—you’ll thank yourself when the season starts.
Let’s go out there and make this season unforgettable. Good luck to everyone gearing up for their high school teams—see you on the field!
Defense now, D1 soon. The journey continues.
